I have known Frank Matthys since 1993, at that time Matthys Wijnimport in Bruges was in its infancy, and the popularity of drinking Australian wines in Europe was on the increase. We have continued to work together since then, first with Petaluma Wines and more recently with Twinwoods Estate and Kalamanda Wines.
Twinwoods Estate is located in Margaret River in Western Australia, it is owned by the Jebsen family who are Danish, and with whom I have worked with for more than 20 years. The family’s aim was to produce top quality wine from Margaret River.
In 2006 I was tasked with the objective to identify and then purchase a top quality vineyard in Margaret River, since then we have continued to plant more vines. The precise location of the Estate is in Wilyabrup.
A mild climate with dry summers and most of the rainfall occurs in winter, the cooling breezes from the Indian Ocean which is only 12 kilometres away makes the location ideal for grape growing. The soils in the region are quite variable which makes site selection critical. The Twinwoods vineyard is on soils known locally as brown pea gravels, these soils are ideal for grape growing as they have very good drainage and have a high mineral content.
Kalamanda Wines which is also owned by Jebsen are made in South Australia with the majority of the grapes coming from the Riverland. Kalamanda’s wines are made for every-day enjoyment.
I have been the winemaker for the Jebsen family from the beginning of their Australian winemaking venture, I am privileged to be associated with this proud family business with its integrity and dedication to quality, as I am likewise with the Matthys family.
